چکیده

An increasingly prevalent developmental paradigm in garbage collection research is hybridisation; i.e. developing new approaches from synthesis of two existing algorithms. The aim is to combine complementary techniques in a cooperative manner so that desirable qualities from each progenitor are retained, while detractions found in one are ameliorated by the other. This paper describes a previously unexplored hybridisation between two particular algorithms; viz. the Beltway and Train algorithms. Beltway specifies an incremental copying solution for single-site, main-memory systems. It generalises a wide range of prior techniques; under particular configurations the collector can emulate semi-space collectors, traditional generational collectors, or older-first generational collectors. Additionally a Beltway collector reclusters objects based on temporal locality. However Beltway collectors cannot exhibit completeness without sacrificing their incrementality. In contrast the Train Algorithm can adopt a copying-based approach that is “aggressively incremental” yet complete. Objects will be reclustered according to spatial locality, and the algorithm offers flexible policy choices in this regard. Further, the Train algorithm is readily adaptable for use in distributed and persistent object systems. The Beltway and Train algorithms exhibit complementary properties. Their hybridisation offers a new approach that has the potential to exhibit these desirable features in combination. This paper reviews the Beltway and Train algorithms, and describes a variety of hybrid forms that can be obtained through their combination. The potential advantages or disadvantages of each is speculated upon, and their potential for use in distributed systems is discussed.

Comprehensive Distributed Garbage Collection by Tracking Causal Dependencies of Relevant Mutator Events

Comprehensive distributed garbage collection an objectoriented distributed systems has mostly been addressed via distributed versions of graph-tracing algorithms, a legacy of centralised garbage collection techniques. Two features jeopardise the scalability of these approaches: the bottleneck associated with having t o reach a global consensus before any resource can actually be reclaimed, and ...

Training Distributed Garbage: The DMOS Collector

A new garbage collection algorithm for distributed object systems, called DMOS (Distributed Mature Object Space), is presented. It is derived from two previous algorithms, MOS (Mature Object Space), sometimes called the train algorithm, and PMOS (Persistent Mature Object Space). The contribution of DMOS is that it provides the following unique combination of properties for a distributed collect...

Randomized Distributed Garbage Collection

With the explosive growth of the Internet and distributed computing, disributed garbage collection (DGC) has become a very important area of research. Single-processor garbage collection is by itself one of the challenging areas of research in computer science. In distributed environments, the problem of garbage collection becomes even harder and more challenging. This is mainly due to the addi...

Garbage Collection of Persistent Objects in Distributed Shared Memory

This paper describes a garbage collection algorithm for distributed persistent objects in a loosely coupled network of workstations. Objects are accessed via a weakly consistent shared distributed virtual memory with recoverable properties. We address the speciic problem of garbage collecting a large amount of distributed persistent objects, cached on several nodes for eecient sharing. For clus...

Distributed Garbage Collection Algorithms

This seminar report presents adoptions of uniprocessor garbage collection techniques which are able to operate in a new context: distributed systems. We see that their application to distributed system poses new problems and that there is currently no algorithm available solving, or even addressing, all of them. The presented algorithms are structured according to their belonging family: refere...
